The Ballad of a Beauty Queen
Krista Kleiner was nervous, but you wouldn’t know it. After our chat, she was scheduled for a very important interview with a Beverly Hills-based modeling agency. She was sitting on a beauty stylist’s chair at Monet’s Salon in Los Angeles, having her hair done and her nails manicured. Krista is never visibly nervous, according to her Filipina mother. She is always focused and takes directions quickly. She can sing, dance and act, the triple threat that could qualify her for a career in Broadway. She is not quite there yet, but at almost twenty-one, Krista is on her way. In March this year, a Psychology major graduate from University of California in San Diego, bested a gaggle of beautiful Filipina beauty contestants and won the Miss Philippines International title, along with the Miss Talent and the Best in Swimsuit.
Krista will represent the Philippines in the Miss International Pageant to be held in Shanghai, China later this year. In the summer of 2008, the 5’9" willowy Krista won major honors at the annual US-Philippines Expo in Fairplex, Pomona. Eight months later, she took a step towards a career in showbiz in the Philippines. Acouple of weeks after her she won the Miss International title, she was discovered by internationally-acclaimed balladeer Julio Iglesias and was promptly asked to join his troupe.
She related that Julio Iglesias invited around nine Miss Philippines International contestants to a dinner at the Araneta’s family home in Manila. Later on, they were asked to demonstrate their singing and dancing talents at a hotel in Manila. "He (Julio) called me over and began interviewing me and asked me questions about my family, my interests, my work, my training, and after those, he asked me if Iwould be willing to tour with him for about a month, and Isaid, "of course," and he said okay.
Mr. Iglesias then asked Krista to perform with him at his show in Araneta Coliseum and she did. "He had me dance a solo number as a back-up dancer; very sexy Latin-type dancing, and once he saw me perform, after the show, he asked to speak [with] my mom and I, and he asked me to join him, not just for one month, because now, he wanted me to join him for three months." Krista thought about the offer for a few hours, and with her parents’ blessings, agreed to Julio’s offer. "
Ireally wanted to take this opportunity, even though it was nerve-wrecking," Krista revealed. "Everything was happening so fast; Iwouldn’t let this opportunity pass me by, so Iinformed him the next day that Iwas willing, and he told me to get myself ready, pack up, because in a day or two we would be leaving for Australia.
Krista’s talents in singing and dancing were showcased in a two-week tour of Asia, including sold-out performances in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, Japan, and shows in Maui and Honolulu, Hawaii. "
The auditoriums were all first-class, and the shows were attended by high class people; and they were all sold-out," Krista relates. "The crowds were encouraging and very supportive. Ienjoyed the tour, being in different countries, getting a feel of the cultures, the vibe, and it’s just amazing." She says of Julio: "He’s so experienced and so smart, and Ilearned much from speaking with him."
Now that the Asian tour is over, Krista will be leaving her Fullerton, California home to prepare for the remaining segments of Julio Iglesias’s World Tribute Concert Tour. "In about a week, we are going to start training in his (Iglesias’) home in Miami (Florida) [and] the Dominican Republic," Krista shared. Part of their itinerary includes a show in Egypt, Morocco, Canada, New York, Las Vegas, Nevada, and selected cities in California. These performances can be seen at Julio Iglesias’s website.Leaving her family behind in the United
States, Krista plunged herself in the vortex of Philippine showbiz – with all its intrigues -- and learned the hard way how to compete and to make friends in a country where she stood out like a sore thumb. It was bad enough that she looked very American; it was worse that her name was very Caucasian sounding.
"At first, it was very difficult because Iwas adjusting to being away from my family; being away from my friends, and living in a foreign country," she relates. "And you know something? Life was totally different, and Ifeel that a lot of people are very judgmental of me at the beginning –maybe knowing that Igrew up in America; that Ididn’t look Filipino; why Ididn’t have my family there to support me," she said. Krista revealed that a lot of people that did not know her felt uneasy in her presence because they were not sure what type of person she was, having been born and raised in the United States."But as people got to know me,
I’ve seen they became more warm to me – ‘Oh, ang bait mo pala,’ kasi, yung itsura mo, baka minsan mukha kang mataray, Buti, hind naman pala. Ang sweet mo naman," Krista stated in near perfect Tagalog. When she arrived in Manila, Krista only knew a smattering of Tagalog, but a six-month immersion in the country of her mother fixed that, and pretty soon, she was speaking in Tagalog with an endearing American accent. "My life has been full of ‘intriga’ over there; but, overall, it’s been a great experience and I’m enjoying myself," Krista shared.

When she arrived in Manila two years ago, Krista began hosting in a television show, Go Bingo with Arnel Ignacio. She started out just doing dance numbers. Later, producers gave her more lines. After two seasons in Go Bingo, she began an acting stint in the primetime comedy series Gagambino, followed by a dancing and singing role in the award-winning show SOP, and co-hosting with Tim Yap. She also began appearing as a villain in the popular teleserye, Darna, where her taekwondo training came in handy. On top of these showbiz commitments, she still found time to model creations by well-known couture designers Ben Farrales and Pepsi Herrera."It’s very exciting, first, to be able to have the opportunities; to try all the different fields in entertainment because
I’ve always had a passion for it since the beginning," she said.
"Icould really just pick one to focus on; so Ilearned a lot, and Imet a lot of great people along the way. Of course, at first, it was very difficult because Iwas adjusting to being away from my family; being way from my friends; being in a different country, and – you know – show business life is totally different," Krista added. When she participated in the Binibining Pilipinas Beauty Pageant, her
American citizenship was questioned, but her family helped her overcome that hurdle by proving to the Philippine foreign affairs department that she was a dual citizen--- when she was born in the United States, her mother was still a Filipino citizen. She now carries American and Philippine passports.
"Iam very proud of my family. We are very close, and they are the greatest support system to me life," Krista said. "They gave me so many opportunities; filled my life with love; and because of them. Iwas able to become who Iam. They really established me as person, teaching me my values, and to love everyone around me, and to stay grounded," Krista shared. "Iwas able to acquire the best training from my mom, being a Filipina, and the best that
Icould from my dad – who is a professor at California State University, Fullerton – and Ihave a younger brother who is seventeen years old and studying performing arts."
She said that her being away from her family while living in the Philippines helped her grow as a person and be more independent and mature. "So everything happens for a reason," she philosophizes. "They brought me closer to God – from being away from them – because when Ihad no one to turn to, God was always there for me."

What about her preparation for the MI? Oh well, performing with Julio and his entourage, I guess, is a good training. Anyway, of all the BbP candidates last March she was the most-prepared. She'll breeze thru MI easily...with flying colors!

And the fact that she had already performed in some parts of Japan (like Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo) she could be an instant favorite by most Japanese.

Correct! When she won Best in Swimsuit, I was pretty sure that she would win a crown. And, as the pageant went on, I thought she was BBPU. But, the judges thought otherwise and ...wag na nga...
