Mariah Carey is the self-titled debut album by American singer Mariah Carey, released in the United States on June 12, 1990 by Columbia Records. Although sales were initially slow, it made Carey a star in her home country and yielded four number 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, with the album itself spending eleven weeks at the top of the Billboard 200. The RIAA certified Mariah Carey 9x platinum on December 15, 1999, denoting 9 million shipments in the United States. It is Carey's third best-selling album in the U.S. after Daydream (1995) and Music Box (1993). The album has sold an estimated 15 million copies worldwide.

Emotions is the second studio album by American singer Mariah Carey, released in the United States on September 17, 1991 by Columbia Records. It is primarily composed of strong ballads and dance music - written by Carey herself, Walter Afanasieff, Clivillés & Cole (of C+C Music Factory), and Carole King. The title track became Carey's fifth consecutive number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist to achieve this feat. The album also generated two more top five singles. Contrary to her debut album, Carey wrote and co-produced and musically composed the entire album, providing lyrics for all ten tracks. She was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Producer of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Emotions was eventually certified 4x platinum by the RIAA. As of 2008 it has sold 10 million copies worldwide.

MTV Unplugged is a live album by American singer Mariah Carey, released in the United States on June 2, 1992 by Columbia Records. It produced a U.S. number 1 single, which was the only new song on the album.

Finally having conquered her stage fright and tired of critics suggesting she could not actually sing and that her high notes were synthesized creations in the studio, Carey booked an appearance on the television show MTV Unplugged. The arrangements of the songs were different from the versions created in the studio, because MTV Unplugged involved the use of acoustic instruments only. Carey's whistle register workout on the opening number, "Emotions", brought cheers from the audience and convinced any skeptics that her vocal abilities were real. After the program aired, Carey's cover version of The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" (1970), performed as a duet with backing singer Trey Lorenz, was released as a single due to high demand and topped the U.S. charts. It is her only number 1 out of her eighteen which she hasn't written or co-written by herself, because it is a cover. At present, it also remains as the only number 1 single released from the Unplugged series. The EP yielded a second single, "If It's Over," which was not released in the U.S. and failed in most markets. Carey's appearance on the show gained her respect from many critics, who had previously dismissed her as a studio artist unable or unwilling to play live. The popularity of her performance also led to promotional activities for the album Emotions being cut down.

Music Box is the fourth album and third studio album by pop/R&B singer Mariah Carey. It was released by Columbia Records on August 31, 1993 in North America. The album comprises ballads primarily co-written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff - with whom she had previously worked on Emotions (1991) - and a few urban dance tracks. Other collaborators on Music Box include Babyface and Robert Clivillés/David Cole (also known as C+C Music Factory). Two unused tracks from the album sessions were released as b-sides: "Do You Think of Me" and "Everything Fades Away."

Lead single "Dreamlover" became Carey's most successful single at the time of its release when it topped the U.S. and Canadian singles charts, and Badfinger's "Without You" became her first to reach number 1 in the UK and several other countries across Europe. Carey was nominated for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for "Dreamlover" at the 1994 Grammy Awards but she lost to Whitney Houston; she received the same nomination for "Hero" at the 1995 Grammy Awards but lost it again. Music Box remains one of the best selling albums in history with over 32 million copies sold and is on the List of best-selling albums worldwide.

Merry Christmas is a holiday album by American singer Mariah Carey. Released in the United States on November 1, 1994 by Columbia Records, it is a holiday album featuring both cover versions and original material.It was released at what was the peak of the initial stretch of Carey's career, between Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995). [2] It was certified 5x platinum by the RIAA for shipments of 5 million copies in the U.S.[3] This album was re-released in 2005 in DualDisc format with bonus tracks and music videos.

Daydream is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released on October 3, 1995 by Columbia Records as the follow-up to Carey's commercially successful 1993 album Music Box and 1994 holiday album Merry Christmas. Daydream was slightly different from Music Box, as it was heavily influenced by R&B and hip hop and focused on less of a pure pop sound, a decision that was made by Carey and was not initially well received by her record label.

Despite the misgivings of her label, most critics praised the change of sound from that of her previous records. In terms of sales, Daydream exceeded expectations – eventually becoming her second best selling album behind Music Box, shipping 10 million copies in the United States alone.[1] Daydream is Carey's second album to have achieved diamond status in the U.S. Daydream was listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers in their Definitive 200 Albums of All Time as the 116th most influential and popular album in history.[2] Daydream remains one of her best selling albums with over 25 million copies sold and is on the List of best-selling albums worldwide

The album's lead single "Fantasy" debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Carey the first female artist and just the second performer ever to accomplish the feat.[13] "One Sweet Day" was chosen as the follow-up and, despite repeating the previous feat of debuting at number 1, it spent sixteen weeks at the top of the chart, holding the record for the longest run at number 1 of all time.[13] "Always Be My Baby" did not debut at the top, but eventually become the third song of Daydream to reach number 1 in the U.S.[20] "Forever" and "Underneath the Stars" were released as the fifth and sixth singles respectively in selected countries and "Open Arms" was released as a promotional single in some countries of Europe.

Butterfly is the sixth studio album by American pop/R&B singer Mariah Carey, released on September 16, 1997 in the U.S on Columbia Records. Butterfly was certified 5x platinum by the RIAA and has sold an estimated 15 million copies worldwide.[1] In the booklet of her 2009 album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Carey stated that she considered Butterfly her magnum opus, and that it was a serious turning point in her life.

Butterfly debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart with 236,000 copies sold in its first week; it remained there for one week, in the top twenty for twenty-one weeks and on the chart for fifty-five weeks (making one re-entry). "The Roof (Back in Time)" and "Whenever You Call" received limited release in some countries.

Charmbracelet is the twelfth album and ninth studio album by American singer Mariah Carey, released in the United States on December 3, 2002 by Island Records. It was her first album on the label and was also her first following the release of her film Glitter (2001) Sales of Charmbracelet were an improvement over those of Glitter, but were still lackluster. The album was unable to garner any U.S. hits, as none of its singles made the top 80 of the Billboard Hot 100. The Emancipation of Mimi is the tenth studio album by American singer Mariah Carey. It was released by Island Records on April 4, 2005, and in North America on April 12, 2005. The album focuses on several R&B-related genres, ranging from 1970s retro soul to quiet storm, gospel, and others. It received generally positive reviews and won a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Contemporary R&B Album. After debuting at number 1 with Carey's highest first-week sales during that time, it became the biggest selling album of 2005 in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Emancipation of Mimi has been certified 6x platinum by the RIAA, and it is Carey's best-selling album in the U.S. since Daydream (1995). E=MC2 is the eleventh studio album by American singer Mariah Carey.
