Miss Russia - TQI 2009 Yekaterina Grushanina crowning moment

* Russia won, GAME OVER. After participating in Miss International 2009 and not even placing among the semi-finalists, Ekaterina Grushanina made an extraordinary comeback and won the 2nd MTQI crown for her country in only three years.

* Russia’s victory was not an easy one. Miss Russia received the same number of votes as Miss Brazil, 6 each. All Russian votes came from the Chinese judges, while all Brazilian votes came from the foreign judges. Miss Guinea received 1 vote.

* The tie-break was in the hands of the president of the jury: a Chinese. The close relationship between the two countries might have been decisive.

* Miss Russia was not a popular choice among the contestants. Right after the announcement, most delegates ran to hug and congratulate Miss Brazil. Miss Venezuela stood on the edge of the runway and started screamming in Spanish: “What was it??? Brazil is our queen, you must be crazy!!”.

* Even most other Russian and former Soviet delegates approached Miss Brazil to tell her that she should have been the winner, and not Miss Russia. Miss Brazil took the result very gracefully: “I wanted to win, but it’s a big honor to be the 1st runner-up and a fantastic result for my country. I congratulate Miss Russia for her victory”.

* During the final event, Miss Sri Lanka, the talent competition winner, and Miss New Zealand, the runner-up, performed their numbers for the audience and the whole world. Miss Zimbabwe, thrid in the talent contest, did not perform, but instead, Miss Russia did, something that the organizers did not give any explanation for…

* Miss Guinea, who lives in the United States (she has dual citizenship) and was the first woman to represent this western African nation in a Grand Slam pageant, was very proud of her accomplishment: she was the 2nd runner-up.

* Another debutant, French Polynesia also reached the top 5, and the contestant from this Pacific arquipelago couldn’t be any prouder.

* As a matter of fact, Misses French Polynesia and Poland tied when the judges had to decide for the top 5. They then picked Miss French Polynesia to advance to the final round of competition.

* Another tie happenned when the Top 20 were picked. With Miss Internet and the 5 Continental Queens already included among the semi-finalists, 13 delegates had already been picked, while other 4 had the same scores, tied in 14th place. They were Misses Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, Estonia and Albania. A new round of voting took place, and Miss Canada remained in the competition.

* Also new in Grand Slam competitions, the special tourist regions of Altai (Russia), and Phuket (Thailand), landed in the semi-finals. Turkmenistan had its first ever Grand Slam semi-finalist as well.

* The final event of Miss Tourism Queen International 2009 lasted for 1.5 hour, and was very entertaining. The Chinese found a very unique and original formula, which seemed to please most people who watched it. What it still lacks is emotion to call the finalists and winners, for that, it’s still very ‘cold’ and raw. Overall, it was an excellent show, bringing Grand Slam pageants to a new level, without having to copy the Miss Universe or Miss World formulas.

* Unlike what happened in Miss Universe 2009, where most finalists and the winner were once again from Latin America, and no Asian beauty placed even among the semi-finalist, all continents were represented in MTQI’s final 5: Europe (Russia), Americas (Brazil), Africa (Guinea), Asia (China), and Oceania (French Polynesia).
